to decrease migration to the surface or into the base sheet

Marsh and Fepson은 adhesive(점착제)가 코팅 표면으로 지나치게 migration(이동)되면, 프린트

할 때 코팅 표면에서 splitting(인쇄된 잉크가 종이에서 떨어지는 것)이 생기거나, surface
brightness를 잃게 하거나, ink reception이 나빠지거나, nonuniform해 질 수 있다고 함

※ free water (mobile)에 의한 작용

pigment나 binder가 분산되는데 필요한 양 이외의 물이 코팅 속에 고루 migration되어서 기타
첨가제에 대한 soluble, dispersible properties를 향상시켜 모든 코팅 물질이 coating film 위에
uniform distribution이 되게 한다. 이것에 의해 uniform ink absorption과 ink wettability를 향상

시킨다. 보수제는 이러한 free water가 migration되는 것을 억제함으로써 코팅에서의 수분양을

유지시키는 작용을 하는 것이다.

Variables ∼ 일반적으로 종이 코팅의 최종 목적은 uniform surface를 얻는데 있다. nonuniform-

ity를 얻을 수 있는 방법(변수)은 다음과 같은 것이 있다.

1. Variation in absorption of the base sheet (base sheet의 흡수능의 변화)
base sheet가 일정한(nniform) 흡수 특성을 보이지 않으면, applicator roll과 wipe-off
device 사이나, wipe-off device와 dryer 사이의 low shear에서 water phase는 흡수되기 쉬

운 부분으로 migration(이동)하게 되는데, 이에 따라 nonuniform sheet를 얻게 된다. 이것은

최종 제품의 gloos mottle(얼룩)이나 print mottle을 일으키게 되는데, 일정하지 않은 coat
weight profile이나 reel에서 reel까지의 coat weight 변화에서 확인할 수 있다.
2. Drying mottle

coater dryer에서 지나치게 많은 열이 가해지면, 심한 경우 railroad tracking, orange peel,

mud cracking를 발생시킬 수 있다. 만일, binder가 coating 표면에서 남게 되면 print시에
splitting이 일어나거나 종이 표면에서 인쇄 잉크가 잘 붙지 않는다. 또 base sheet가 non-
uniform하다면, 위 1에서와 같은 문제가 일어날 수 있다.

3. Blade coaters에 의한/에서 scratches or streaks(선, 줄무늬)

foreign particle에 의해 생기는 coating scratches는 water-retention agent가 주입됨으로
써, viscosity와 lubrication을 향상시켜 foreign particle이 blade에서 미끄러지도록 하여
scratches를 억제한다. 이러한 foreign particle은 sheet를 caccuming하거나, coating을
